EssentialPotassium chloride (KCl) is the primary potassium fertilizer at 60% K₂O. Known as MOP (Muriate of Potash) — it accounts for over 95% of global potassium use. Applied on all field crops except chlorine-sensitive ones (tobacco, potato, table-grape vineyards).
Powershift vs Vario
Two main modern farm-tractor transmission types from 150 HP: (1) Powershift / PowerQuad / AutoQuad — discrete gears that shift under load via hydraulic clutches, typically 16×16 or 24×24; (2) Vario / CVT / AutoPowr / S-Matic — continuously variable speed control.
Pre-emergence
EssentialHerbicide application before the crop emerges or before mass weed germination. Pre-emergence products make up ~30% of Ukraine's herbicide market — they are the backbone of weed control in soy, sunflower, maize, rapeseed, and sugar beet.
Primed seed
Primed seed is seed that has been partially germinated and re-dried. Metabolic processes are activated but stopped before visible sprouting. After sowing, emergence is 1–3 days faster with more uniform establishment. Technology common on vegetables, sugar beet, sunflower.
Protein percent
EssentialThe percentage of protein in raw milk — the second key price parameter alongside fat. Ukraine's base rate is 3.0%, with each +0.1% adding UAH 0.30–0.60/kg. For cheesemaking (mozzarella, hard cheese), protein is critical.
PRP vs ESP generator rating
Two key diesel-generator ratings per ISO 8528-1:2018 — PRP (Prime Power, unlimited runtime under 70% average load) and ESP (Emergency Standby Power, max 200 h/year at 70% peak load). Choice depends on duty profile.
PTO (Power Take-Off)
PTO is a shaft on the rear (sometimes front) of a tractor that transfers torque from the engine to mounted or trailed implements (mowers, sprayers, spreaders, balers). Standard speeds: 540 rpm, 1,000 rpm; on large tractors — 540E / 1000E (economy modes).

Rotor vs straw walker
A key combine technology choice: the grain-straw separation system. Straw walker — classic, 4–8 'keys,' pendulum action. Rotor (rotor/axial) — centrifugal separation in a rotating cylinder. Hybrid (Claas APS) — drum + small walker. The choice affects throughput, fuel use, grain quality, and straw quality.
Roundup Ready
Bayer/Monsanto's technology giving genetically modified glyphosate tolerance. GMO soy is prohibited in Ukraine under Law 1103-IV (2007), so Roundup Ready is not officially grown — but contraband seed remains an export issue.

Selective Catalytic Reduction — a technology reducing NOx emissions by 90–95% through AdBlue (urea solution) injection into hot exhaust, where ammonia reacts with NOx over a vanadium or zeolite catalyst. Standard on Stage IV/V tractors.
Section Control
EssentialSection Control automatically shuts off sprayer/drill/spreader sections when entering an already-covered area or the field boundary, based on GPS coordinates. Cuts dose overlap on wedges and headlands, saving 4–8% of plant-protection products, seed, or fertilizer. Requires ISOBUS TC-SC + compatible implement controller.
Seed treatment
EssentialSeed treatment is the application of fungicide, insecticide, and micronutrients to seed before sowing to protect against seed-borne infections (smut, Fusarium, Septoria) and early pests (wireworm, wheat thrips, frit fly). Standard technology for winter cereals, corn, sunflower, rapeseed, soybean.
Seeding rate
EssentialSeeding rate is the mass or number of seeds per hectare to reach target plant density. Calculated from 1000-seed weight, field germination, and target final density. For winter wheat typically 180–250 kg/ha (4.5–5.5 million viable seeds/ha).
SGN (Size Guide Number)
Integer representation of the median granule diameter of a fertilizer: SGN = diameter (mm) × 100. Example: SGN 270 = 2.7 mm. A key parameter for spreader calibration (centrifugal and pneumatic) — broadcast uniformity across 24–36 m swath.
Slip controller
A slip controller is an automated system on modern tractors that measures drive-wheel slip (by comparing wheel speed and real GPS ground speed) and regulates implement depth, draft, or diff lock to keep slip in the optimum 8–15% band.
Slow-release urea (SCU, PCU)
SCU (sulfur-coated urea) is urea covered with a sulfur layer; PCU (polymer-coated urea) uses a polymer shell. Both technologies slow N release over 8–16 weeks, enabling a single-pass application of the full rate without splitting.
Soil CEC
The soil's capacity to hold positively charged ions (K⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, NH₄⁺, H⁺, Al³⁺) on clay particle and organic matter surfaces. Units: cmol(+)/kg. Chernozems 35–50, sod-podzolic 5–15. Determines K and Ca fertilization efficiency.
Soil compaction (ploughpan)
A compacted soil layer at 20–35 cm depth formed by repeated ploughing to the same depth with heavy machinery. Bulk density >1.4 g/cm³ cuts yield by 10–25% by blocking roots and water. A leading cause of chernozem degradation in Ukraine.
Soil organic matter (SOM)
EssentialAll organic material in the soil — living organisms, plant residues at various decomposition stages, and stable humus. Optimal chernozem content is 4.5–6.5% in the top 0–30 cm; each additional 1% SOM holds +150–200 m³ water/ha.
Soil pH
EssentialA measure of soil acidity or alkalinity from 0 (maximum acidity) to 14 (maximum alkalinity). The optimal pH for most cereals is 6.0–7.0, and for sunflower and maize 6.0–7.5.

Sowing date
EssentialSowing date is the optimal time window for sowing, when conditions favor germination, early development, and reaching the relevant phenological stage before critical periods (winter — for winter crops, summer droughts — for spring crops). A yield-critical factor alongside variety and nutrition.
Spring N top-dressing window
EssentialSpring N top-dressing is the critical N application window for winter crops (wheat, barley, rapeseed) at resumption of growth (BBCH 20–25). Optimal timing: on frozen-thawed soil, air temperature +3 to +7°C, before active growth begins. In Ukraine — late February to mid-March.
Starter fertilizer
A starter fertilizer is a mineral fertilizer banded next to the seed at planting. Main goal: secure phosphorus access in early growth when the root system is under-developed. Typical starters: DAP, MAP, NPK 10-26-26, liquid 10-34-0.

Grain storage costs — elevator fees or own-capacity amortization, drying energy, ventilation, insurance, and natural losses. In Ukraine UAH 40–120/t/month at a certified elevator; UAH 30–80/t/month in silobags.
Sulfur forms in fertilizers
Sulfur in mineral fertilizers comes in two forms: sulfate (SO₄²⁻, immediately plant-available) and elemental (S⁰, requires oxidation by soil Thiobacillus to sulfate over 2–8 weeks). Rapeseed, sunflower, and brassicas need 40–80 kg S/ha — a mandatory nutrient for these crops.
Surfactant
A class of adjuvants that reduces droplet surface tension and boosts leaf contact. Divided into non-ionic (safest — Trend 90, Tween 20, SilWet), cationic, anionic, and amphoteric. Critical for crop-protection products on plants with waxy epidermis.
Swath
A swath (or windrow) is a strip of cut crop (grass or grain from the head) formed as a row on the field for subsequent tedding, drying, and pickup (by baler or combine). Swath width depends on header/mower width, crop, and purpose.
Tank mix
EssentialApplying two or more crop-protection products, fertilizers, or adjuvants from a single sprayer tank at once. In Ukraine, 60–80% of cereal and oilseed treatments are tank-mixed — saving 1–2 passes per season and UAH 180–350/ha in fuel costs.
THD
An electrical power quality indicator — the percentage ratio of harmonic amplitude to the fundamental 50 Hz. Per DSTU EN 50160:2014, grid THD must be ≤8%. Quality hybrid inverters deliver <3%, cheap no-brand units 8–15% (damaging farm electronics).

TMR mixer
A TMR (Total Mixed Ration) mixer prepares full-ration cattle feed by chopping and mixing forage (silage, baleage, hay), concentrates (grain, meal), and minerals. Hopper volume 6–46 m³. Types: (1) vertical (1–3 augers) — most common; (2) horizontal (rollers or paddles) — for soft feeds.
Torque-to-yield bolts
Torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts are tightened beyond the elastic range into the plastic zone to secure uniform clamping (cylinder head, con-rods, head bolts). Per ISO 898-1, a reused TTY bolt loses 15–30% of its clamp load and must be replaced.
Tracks
Tracks are an alternative to wheels on heavy tractors and combines. Two types: (1) full-track (John Deere 9RT, Case Quadtrac, Challenger MT800); (2) half-track (rear only — JD 8RX, AGCO Fendt MT). Benefits: lower ground pressure, better drawbar pull.
Tractor power class
EssentialTractor power class is the grouping by engine power (kW or HP) and drawbar pull, defining suitability for given field operations. Ukraine uses both the Soviet-era classification (drawbar classes 0.6 / 0.9 / 1.4 / 2 / 3 / 5 tons-force) and Western (HP classes 40 / 80 / 150 / 250 / 400+).
UAN (abbreviation)
UAN is the abbreviation for 'urea-ammonium nitrate', the general name for a family of liquid nitrogen fertilizers (UAN-28, UAN-30, UAN-32). In Ukrainian farm practice, 'UAN' without a number usually means UAN-32 — the most common grade.
UAN-32 (urea-ammonium nitrate solution)
EssentialUAN is a liquid nitrogen fertilizer — a solution of urea and ammonium nitrate in water. Graded by N content: UAN-28, UAN-30, UAN-32. Contains three N forms: amide (50%), ammonium (25%), nitrate (25%), giving staged plant availability.

ULV (ultra-low volume) spraying applies concentrated product without water dilution at 0.5–5 L/ha (vs 100–300 L/ha in conventional spraying). Typical droplets measure 50–100 µm (Volume Median Diameter). Used on drones and aircraft.
Urea
EssentialUrea (CO(NH₂)₂) is the nitrogen fertilizer with the highest N content among solid forms: 46% nitrogen in amide form. Typical application rates for main crops: 150–250 kg/ha physical weight or 69–115 kg active N/ha.
Urease inhibitor
A urease inhibitor is a substance that temporarily blocks soil urease enzyme, slowing hydrolysis of urea amide-N to ammonium. Purpose: buy time until rainfall or soil incorporation to minimize N loss via ammonia volatilization.
Variety
EssentialA variety is a genetically uniform population of a crop plant with stable agronomic traits. Unlike a hybrid, a variety self-reproduces: seed harvested from the crop can be re-sown for 2–4 years without loss of performance. Main variety crops in Ukraine: wheat, barley, oat, pea, soybean.
VAT
EssentialUkrainian Value Added Tax is 20% on most goods and services, including agricultural chemistry. Registered VAT payers (agricultural producers with annual turnover above 1 million UAH) can reclaim VAT on input expenses.
Vernalization
Vernalization is a physiological process during which winter plants (wheat, barley, rye, rapeseed) experience a period of low temperatures (+1 to +5°C for 30–60 days) that switches them from vegetative to reproductive growth. Without vernalization, winter crops don't form an ear/pod.
VF / IF tires
Agricultural tire technology with reinforced sidewalls that allows operation at 20% (IF) or 40% (VF) lower inflation pressure at the same load. Key benefit — reduced chernozem soil compaction, critical for rapeseed, soybean, sugar beet.
VRI/VRA (Variable Rate)
EssentialVRA (Variable Rate Application) is a technology for applying fertilizer, seed, plant-protection products, or water (VRI — Variable Rate Irrigation) at rates that vary within a field per a prescription map. Requires ISOBUS TC-GEO + compatible equipment.
W.A.L.E.S.+ (tank-mix order)
EssentialA standardized tank-loading sequence: Water conditioners → Adjuvants → Liquids (SC/SL) → Emulsifiables (EC) → Solids (WG/WP) — with agitation between each step. Breaking the order causes precipitation, phytotoxicity, and loss of the tank load (UAH 50 000+ per fill).
Water conditioner
An adjuvant that lowers working-solution pH to 5.5–6.5 and chelates Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Fe³⁺ ions in hard water. Critical for glyphosate, 2,4-D, sulfonylureas: at water pH >7.5, efficacy drops 30–50% through hydrolysis. Examples: Proquest, X-Change, LI-700.
Wet clutch
A wet clutch is a clutch running in an oil bath composed of multiple metal-ceramic friction discs. Used in Powershift and CVT transmissions of modern tractors. Service life — 8,000–15,000 engine hours (3–5× longer than a dry-disc MTZ clutch).
Wilting point
Soil moisture at which a plant loses turgor and cannot recover even overnight — water is held by the soil at potential <−1500 kPa. Chernozems 10–14% by volume; sandy soils 3–5%. A key input to AquaCrop and CROPWAT models.
WTO agricultural commitments
Ukraine has been a WTO member since 16 May 2008. Key agri commitments: Aggregate Measurement of Support (AMS) — USD 3.04 billion/year domestic support ceiling. A Polish grain dispute is ongoing over EU imports in 2024–2025.
