Term

Stem elongation

Also known as: jointing

Full explanation

BBCH stages: 30 (start — 1st node above soil), 31 (1st node 1+ cm above ground), 32 (2nd node), 33 (3rd node), 34 (4th node), 35–37 (flag-leaf formation), 37 (flag leaf fully extended), 39 (flag-leaf ligule visible). Nodes — key structural element: weak, thin nodes → lodging; robust, short → stable canopy. Growth regulation via retardants: CCC products (chlormequat chloride), trinexapac-ethyl, mepiquat-chloride + prohexadione-calcium — mandatory in intensive wheat programs with 7+ t/ha potential. Application: retardant at BBCH 30–32 shortens lower internodes 15–30%, boosting lodging resistance. Rapeseed — growth regulator metconazole (Carax, BASF) at autumn BBCH 12–16. Trade-off: retardant costs UAH 180–380/ha, but lodging on 7 t/ha wheat = 1–3 t/ha loss + harvest complications — ROI 500%+.
