Soil compaction (ploughpan)

A ploughpan forms over several seasons of uniform tillage and is diagnosed by: (1) penetrometer — >3.0 MPa resistance at 25–30 cm, (2) visual inspection when digging a pit — colour and structure change at the plough-depth boundary, (3) crop roots growing horizontally in the topsoil rather than reaching deeper. Consequences: wheat roots reach only 40–60 cm instead of 120–150, losing access to moisture and NPK from the subsoil; water infiltration drops from 20–40 mm/h to 5–10 mm/h; runoff and erosion increase. Remediation: (1) deep loosening (chisel plough to 35–50 cm) every 3–5 years, UAH 600–1,200/ha, (2) crop rotation with deep taproot species (alfalfa 2–3 m, sunflower 1.5–2 m, rapeseed 1.5 m), (3) switch to no-till / strip-till, gradually rebuilding biopores over 5–10 years, (4) avoid fieldwork on over-wet soil. Per NAAS data, 40–60% of Ukraine's arable soils now have a critical ploughpan.
