Term

Ammonium sulfate

Also known as: AS, ammonium sulphate

Full explanation

Ammonium sulfate is the cheapest source of sulfate-S (S as SO₄²⁻, directly plant-available) on the Ukrainian market. Critical for rapeseed: sulfur is the second most important nutrient after N — deficiency cuts yield 10–25% even with optimal N. Rates: rapeseed 250–350 kg/ha physical weight (52–74 kg N + 60–84 kg S/ha) in autumn and spring, sunflower 100–150 kg/ha. Physiologically acidifying — drops soil pH 1.0–1.5 units per unit-N on repeat applications without lime. April 2026 price: UAH 12 000–14 000/t [VERIFY]. Producers: imports from Europe (BASF, caprolactam byproduct), China, Turkey. Trade-off: cheaper per kg N than AN, but half the N concentration (21% vs 34.4%) increases logistics cost; for farms without S demand, not worth it.
