Grain silobag

Also known as: silo bag, grain bag

Full explanation

The technology is Argentine, developed by INTA in the 1980s. Grain is loaded at 13–14% moisture (any wetter and mould risk rises). The bag is airtight; CO₂ from grain respiration displaces oxygen, creating anaerobic conditions that kill insects and moulds in 14–30 days. Main producers: Ipesa Sil (Argentina), Plastar (Brazil), Silofitas (Greece), AGROTRADE Ukraine. April 2026 price: 9' × 60 m = USD 1,100–1,600/bag. Storage cost UAH 80–150/t/month versus UAH 120–280/t/month at a commercial elevator plus drying/transport. Advantages: fast loading (50–80 t/h), minimal infrastructure, flexible sales timing. Drawbacks: rodent/bird damage risk, need for a flat dry field with a protective underlay, limited export compatibility. Popular with 500–2,000 ha farms as a response to the 2022–2025 elevator shortage in the South.
