Start with your yield target

The single most important decision before buying fertilizer is setting a realistic yield target. That target determines total N rate, NPK ratio, and per-hectare budget. Realistic Ukrainian targets by agro-zone: 4-5 t/ha — baseline for Polissia and northern Forest-Steppe without intensification; 5-6 t/ha — standard for Forest-Steppe with reliable top-dressings; 6-7 t/ha — intensive technology on southern Forest-Steppe chernozems; 7-8 t/ha — maximum for top Poltava and Cherkasy farms with full phase control. Total N for each level: 80, 120, 160, and 200 kg/ha respectively, with corresponding P₂O₅ and K₂O balanced through NPK compounds. If budget is tight, set the target at 4-5 t/ha honestly — an underfunded 7 t/ha program will deliver 5 t/ha at the cost of 6.

NPK program for 6 t/ha

A typical balanced NPK program for 6 t/ha on Forest-Steppe chernozem: autumn base — NPK 10-26-26, 250-300 kg/ha (25 kg N, 65 kg P₂O₅, 65 kg K₂O) applied under primary tillage 30–40 days before sowing. Autumn starter N — 30-40 kg/ha ammonium nitrate co-applied at sowing to speed root establishment. Spring top-dressing at tillering (BBCH 21–25) — UAN-32 or ammonium nitrate, 80-100 kg N/ha. Second top-dressing at stem elongation (BBCH 30-32) — 40-50 kg N/ha. Third foliar application at heading (BBCH 55–59) — urea 46%, 15-20 kg N/ha together with microelements (Mn, Zn, Cu). Total N — 165-200 kg/ha; P₂O₅ — 65 kg/ha; K₂O — 65 kg/ha. The rate structure closely follows NUBiP Forest-Steppe trials for bread wheat at 28–32% gluten grain quality.

UAN, ammonium nitrate, or urea?

The choice of nitrogen form depends on three factors: available equipment, farm size, and application phase. UAN-32 is optimal for farms with ≥18 m sprayer booms and 300+ ha; the liquid form allows tank mixing with herbicides and growth regulators, saving 1-2 passes per season. Ammonium nitrate is the classic choice for small and mid farms (under 300 ha) using Amazone, Bogballe, or Kuhn spreaders; best for early-spring top-dressing on thawing soil thanks to instant nitrate availability. Urea is the cheapest per kg N in April 2026 (~48 UAH/kg vs 55-56 for AN and UAN), but has 8-20% volatilization losses without immediate incorporation or NBPT inhibitor. Use only as a base or on moist soil with rainfall forecast in the first 48 hours, or paired with Agrotain/Limus at 180–240 UAH/t.

Per-hectare budget in April 2026

A realistic per-hectare fertilizer budget for 6 t/ha winter wheat in April 2026: NPK 10-26-26 250 kg × 17,400 UAH/t = 4,350 UAH; UAN-32 350 kg × 17,800 UAH/t = 6,230 UAH (for 100 kg N); ammonium nitrate N33 150 kg × 19,400 UAH/t = 2,910 UAH (for 50 kg N); foliar urea 30 kg × 22,100 UAH/t = 663 UAH. Total fertilizer cost — about 14,150 UAH/ha. For 5 t/ha the budget drops to 11,500 UAH/ha; for 7-8 t/ha it rises to 17,000-18,500 UAH/ha with additional N and micronutrients (YaraVita, Mantrac Pro, or Humifield). Add 2-3% for logistics and 5-7% supplier margin, plus a 4–6% seasonal premium if you buy in April-May rather than locking in by the end of February.

Where to buy in 2026

Several stable supply sources serve the 2026 Ukrainian market. Domestic production — OSTCHEM and Group DF (Cherkasy Azot, Rivneazot) provide 55-60% of ammonium nitrate and UAN volume. Imports — Yara International (Norway/Poland), EuroChem (international), BASF, and ICL cover the rest plus specialty NPK formulas. Import prices run 5-10% above domestic but deliver stable granulation and transparent logistics. Distributors in Ukraine: Ramzai, Eridon, ATB-Agro, Agroscope, MHP Agro. For April 2026 purchases verify your ammonium nitrate storage permit (precursor material) — State Food Service certificate and inventory logs are mandatory.

Frequently asked questions

How much NPK does 6 t/ha winter wheat need in Ukraine?
For a 6 t/ha target on Forest-Steppe chernozem a typical program is 165-200 kg N/ha, 65 kg P₂O₅/ha, and 65 kg K₂O/ha. Nitrogen is split into a base (25 kg), starter (30-40 kg), and 2-3 spring top-dressings (95-135 kg combined).
UAN or ammonium nitrate in 2026 — which is cheaper?
In April 2026 the cost per kg of nitrogen is almost identical: about 55.6 UAH for UAN-32 vs 56.4 UAH for ammonium nitrate. The choice depends on equipment: large farms with sprayers pick UAN (tank mixing and even spread); small and mid farms with spreaders pick ammonium nitrate (early spring on thaw).
When should winter wheat receive its first spring top-dressing?
The first spring top-dressing goes on at the tillering stage when average daily temperature stabilizes above 5°C and the field is trafficable. Typically that's late March to early April in the Steppe and mid-to-late April in Forest-Steppe and Polissia.
Can I cut the fertilizer budget without losing yield?
Only if you also lower the yield target. Running a 6 t/ha program at a 4 t/ha budget produces worse results than an honest 5 t/ha plan. The only safe savings are logistics (buying direct from producer) and correct form choice (urea on base, ammonium nitrate on thaw).
Where to buy winter wheat fertilizer in Ukraine?
Primary sources: Ukrainian producers OSTCHEM and Group DF (Cherkasy Azot, Rivneazot); importers Yara International, EuroChem, and BASF; distributors Ramzai, Eridon, ATB-Agro. For ammonium nitrate you need a State Food Service precursor storage certificate.
