Sunflower HT-Platform Picker for Ukraine: Orobanche Race × Herbicide Programme × Pl-Gene

HT platform × orobanche race × herbicide programme is the 3-constraint decision that gates every sunflower hybrid pick. The calculator returns the right platform, the minimum Pl-gene (Pl6 / Pl7 / Pl8+), and a UA hybrid shortlist in 30 seconds. Sunflower is the #1 UA counterfeit crop at 20–30% — verify before purchase.

Your context

Three inputs → recommended HT platform + minimum Pl-gene + hybrid shortlist. Sunflower = #1 UA counterfeit category (20–30%).

⚠️ Race-gated
Recommended platform
Clearfield Plus (CLP)
Minimum Pl-gene
Pl7

The combination works only when the hybrid's Pl-gene covers your race. The shortlist below is already filtered.

Lower dose, cleaner carry-over, broader spectrum than CL. Dominant premium choice 2026.
Premium seed price ~15–25% above CL.

Steppe zone: Pl8+ mandatory. Race F — CL/CLP adds a chemical layer on A-E but NOT on F. Pl8+ gene in the hybrid is mandatory; platform choice reduces but does not eliminate orobanche pressure.

How the calculation works

UA is projected to sow 6.1 M ha of sunflower in 2026/27 (up from 5.0–5.5 M in 2024/25) — the largest sunflower area in the world. Three HT platforms dominate the market: Clearfield (IMI tolerance to imazamox), Clearfield Plus (imazamox + imazapyr, premium 2026), and ExpressSun (tribenuron-methyl, excellent dicot + ambrosia control). Platform choice is GATED by the orobanche race in the field — broomrape (Orobanche cumana) parasitises sunflower roots and destroys 30–90% of yield. Races A–D are controlled by Pl6+ hybrids; race E needs Pl7+; race F needs Pl8+; race G needs Pl8+ or stacked Pl17/18. The Clearfield / Clearfield Plus chemical layer (imazamox) suppresses ONLY races A–E — for F/G the herbicide layer is useless and the Pl-gene in the hybrid becomes the only line of defence. ExpressSun has NO orobanche activity at all — the Pl-gene decides on every race. The calculator maps the planned herbicide programme to compatible platforms, checks race × platform × Pl-gene consistency, filters the UA-registered hybrid catalog, and returns a top-5 shortlist with breeder, FAO group, Pl-gene, and counterfeit tier. Procurement window: contract Oct–Dec for the best rebate, optimal Jan–Feb, and March–May is the peak counterfeit window (grey Pl8 stock positioned for late buyers).

  1. 1

Pick the orobanche race in the field

Race A–G or Unknown. If you don't know, the calculator recommends a 2-season race survey via NAAS or a regional agronomy institute (UAH 8,000–15,000).

  2. 2

    Pick the planned herbicide programme

Imidazolinone (imazamox / imazapyr) → CL / CLP; tribenuron-methyl → ExpressSun; glyphosate → Roundup Ready (GM — grey channel); glufosinate → LibertyLink; conventional post-em or mechanical → Conventional.

  3. 3

    Pick the farm zone

Steppe (Pl8+ mandatory because of races F / G), Forest-Steppe (Pl7+ often fine), Polissia (fallback for the Carpathian zone).

  4. 4

    Read the top-line verdict

✅ Compatible — all three gates align; ⚠️ Race-gated — the platform covers the herbicide, but the hybrid's Pl-gene MUST cover the race; 🚫 Field-loss risk — structural trap (switch platform or commission a race survey).

  5. 5

    Review the hybrid shortlist

3–5 UA-registered hybrids on the chosen platform with the race in the resistance array. Cards show breeder, Pl-gene, days to maturity, oil, counterfeit tier, and evidence tag (C / IV / AI / NLV).

  6. 6

Check the counterfeit + procurement advisories

Sunflower is the #1 UA counterfeit (20–30%). Buy only through MAPF-registered dealers with per-bag etykеtka + lot-number verification. If the current month is March–May, you are in the peak counterfeit window (+30% risk).

When to use this tool

  • Pick a hybrid for 500 ha with race F + imazamox programme (CLP + Pl8+)
  • Compare Clearfield vs ExpressSun for a Forest-Steppe farm with race E
  • Verify a dealer's hybrid recommendation against your race survey
  • Decide whether to commission a 2-season orobanche race survey (UAH 8–15K [VERIFY])

Limitations

Only the top ~11 UA-registered sunflower hybrids are surfaced (seed-kb §Section F — ship-now bucket); the long tail (55+ varieties from sops.gov.ua) is deferred to v0.2 when the vendor catalog wires into `compare_products`. The race map assumes a farmer-provided field ID — remote-sensing orobanche detection is not modelled (potential v2). Platform choice assumes herbicide supply is available (post-2022 supply disruption is possible). The calculator is advisory; the final hybrid pick still needs a dealer + agronomist sign-off. YMYL: a bad platform × race combo on 500 ha can cost UAH 10–20 M through field loss (orobanche parasitism + failed weed control).

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Clearfield and Clearfield Plus?
Clearfield (CL) is BASF's original platform with tolerance to imazamox (IMI); it permits one post-em application of Eurolightning / Pulsar 40 for broadleaf + grass control plus a chemical layer on orobanche races A–E. Clearfield Plus (CLP) is the 2014+ upgrade — added tolerance to imazapyr (a second IMI), giving a lower dose, a cleaner carry-over to follow crops (less damage to sugar beet, peas, rapeseed), and a broader weed spectrum. The premium is ~15–25% above CL seed price. In 2026, CLP dominates the UA Steppe market — the best Pl8+ hybrid combinations (P64HE118, Sumiko HTS) are commercially available. Rule of thumb: if your rotation has sugar beet or peas within 2 years, CLP is almost mandatory; if it is a cereal-heavy rotation, CL is cheaper.
How do I identify my field's orobanche race?
Three methods. (1) Field history — if a previous harvest showed >10% plants infested even with a Pl7 hybrid, you have a Pl7-breaking race (likely F or G for Steppe fields). (2) 2-season race survey — send orobanche seed-capsule samples to NAAS (Institute of Oilseed Crops, Zaporizhzhia) or a regional agronomy institute for an inoculation test against reference Pl-gene differentials. Typical cost UAH 8,000–15,000 [VERIFY], result in 12–18 months. (3) Historical oblast-level maps — Steppe (Zaporizhzhia / Kherson / Mykolaiv / Dnipropetrovsk / Odesa) has F/G widely documented; Forest-Steppe is mostly A–E. Default for a Steppe farmer without data: assume F/G and buy a Pl8+ hybrid.
Why is ExpressSun not always better than Clearfield Plus?
ExpressSun (SX, tribenuron-methyl) has three advantages over CLP: (a) excellent dicot control including ambrosia (which is evolving IMI resistance); (b) split 25+20 g/ha gives flexibility; (c) low carry-over allows sugar beet / peas the next year. BUT tribenuron has NO orobanche activity — no chemical layer on any race. That means under SX the full orobanche pressure falls on the Pl-gene in the hybrid. At race F/G, the SX farmer AND the CLP farmer both rely on the Pl8+ gene, but the CLP farmer gets an extra chemical layer on races A–E (which lowers overall pressure + long-term seed-bank build-up). SX wins for: Forest-Steppe + race D–E + a rotation with sugar-beet carry-over risk. CLP wins for: Steppe + race F/G + intensive sunflower rotation.
What counterfeit signs should I check at delivery?
Six mandatory checks per bag. (1) MAPF seed-subject registry — the dealer must be on the Держреєстр суб'єктів насінництва (Law 411-IV Art. 15); absence = automatic disqualification. (2) UA-standard etykеtka — breeder-holder, lot-number, crop, variety, class (F1), rate, sowing-year, DSTU clause. (3) Lot-number match — the number on the bag matches the certificate of quality. (4) Treatment-color — the fungicide / insecticide seed-dressing is visible and even (absence = Type E fraud). (5) Price vs 90-day median — more than 20% below median is a red flag, more than 35% below is a double red flag. (6) Purchase window — March–May is the peak counterfeit window (grey Pl8 stock positioned for late buyers). On any failed check, run full 6-layer authentication: breeder authorization letter + PCR variety-ID lab (UAH 2,000–4,000 [VERIFY]) + cross-reference against sops.gov.ua.
