First decision: how urgent is this

The advice to stop the tractor immediately is not always right, and the difference costs money in both directions. Start by assessing the nature of the leak. A drip or a damp patch on the yard is a weeping seal: annoying, needs repair, but it allows an unhurried drive to the workshop with the level watched. A pressurised jet, smoke on the exhaust manifold, or a pool forming quickly — shut the engine down at once: the level falls to critical within minutes, and oil on hot metal is also a fire risk. The intermediate case is settled by the dipstick: check the level, and if it is normal you have time; if it is near the lower mark, go no further.

Which system: colour, position, smell

A tractor has three separate oil systems and it is worth not confusing them, because the repairs differ by an order of magnitude. Engine oil is dark, close to black in a run-in engine, and the patch sits under the front of the machine near the sump, oil filter or front cover. Transmission oil is noticeably thicker with a distinct sharp smell, and appears under the gearbox or axle, most often from shaft seals. Hydraulic fluid is the lightest and thinnest, escaping from high-pressure hoses, quick couplers and cylinder rods, frequently only under load. Lay clean cardboard under the machine overnight — that localises the patch far better than inspecting a dirty underside. Another approach is to degrease the suspect area first and then run the engine: fresh oil on clean metal shows the exit point immediately.

Likely sources, in order of probability

Start with the simple things, because the most frequent causes are the cheapest. An under- or over-tightened sump plug and its single-use sealing washer is the first thing to check after a service. Next the oil filter: a doubled rubber seal, where the old one stayed stuck to the housing and the new filter went on over it, produces a steady pressurised leak. Then seals on the crankshaft and transmission shafts, which harden with age and overheating. In hydraulics the usual culprits are high-pressure hoses: cracks in the outer layer, chafing where they touch the frame, worn seals in quick couplers. A cylinder rod seal announces itself as a film on the polished rod.

Temporary fixes and their limits

In the field it is legitimate to reduce a leak enough to reach the place of repair. Tighten a clamp, fit a spare hose, snug a fitting, top the oil up to level and check it every half hour of work. What not to do: top up with something similar instead of the correct fluid — mixing transmission and hydraulic oils of different specifications destroys seals and ends expensively. Nor should you count on stop-leak additives: they soften rubber seals throughout the system rather than only at the point you care about. A temporary fix has to stay temporary — logged, with a planned date for the proper repair. A practical rule: once you are topping up more than once a shift, the machine is no longer in a fit-to-drive condition but in a stopped-until-repaired one.

What reduces the chance of a repeat

Most leaks have a history that could have been spotted. Check levels every shift — a minute that catches the problem while it is still a drip. Wash the underside of the machine before the season: on clean metal a fresh patch shows at once, on dirty metal it does not. Do not exceed the recommended hydraulic pressure when setting up mounted implements. Keep the working fluid clean: contaminated hydraulic oil wears seals considerably faster, which is precisely why the ISO 4406 cleanliness standard exists. And replace high-pressure hoses by age rather than on failure — rubber ages even without hours on it, and a hose bursting in the field stops work at the worst possible moment of the season.
