Поршневі кільця служать для формування ущільнення між корпусом поршня і стінкою циліндра, що запобігає проникненню газів циліндра згоряння в картер двигуна, підтримує постійний рівень мастила між стінкою циліндра і поршнем і регулює витрату моторного масла шляхом зіскоблювання масла зі стінки циліндра назад у відстійник.
