About the brand
UPL Limited (before 2019 — United Phosphorus Limited) was founded in 1969 in Mumbai by the Shroff family as a maker of phosphorus insecticides for the Indian market. In 55 years the company grew into the world's fifth-largest crop protection producer: after acquiring Arysta LifeScience in 2019 for $4.2 billion, UPL gained a portfolio of 1,300+ active ingredients, 14,000 registrations in 130+ countries, and 12,500 employees. UPL's model is post-patent chemistry: the company does not invest in discovering new molecules (like Bayer or BASF) but focuses on manufacturing active ingredients after patent expiry. This lets it offer farmers identical actives at 20-35% of originator price. UPL produces both standalone ingredients and ready-mix combinations for key crops: cereals, sunflower, rapeseed, maize, soybean.
